P-12 Principal Induction Years 1 and 2

Rationale

The role of a Catholic school principal in the 21st century in leading a faith-based learning community is both exciting and significant. Current research emphasises the importance of the principal in shaping the climate in which effective teaching and learning occurs. They are learners themselves, actively involved in developing capacity and sustainability in the school’s community. Effective principals engage and inspire the community to develop a shared vision, mission and strategic direction for the school. Their innovation and improvement plans are instrumental in the enactment of this vision and direction.

The first year of the P-12 Principal Induction program is designed to meet the needs of principals in the early stages of their principalship. The activities are spaced across the year and focus on the AITSL National Professional Standard for Principals Professional Practices;

  • Leading the management of the school
  • Leading improvement, innovation and change
  • Developing self and others
  • Leading Teaching and Learning.

These standards are embedded in the context of the Catholic school and hence Leading a Faith Community is a critical aspect of the program. Other components are:

  • the allocation of a mentor in Year 1 who will provide ongoing support throughout the first year of a principal’s appointment;
  • provision of 360° feedback in Year 2 with the provision of a coach to support development of specific leadership attributes.

Target Group

Principals who been appointed in the Archdiocese of Melbourne for the first time.

Goal

Principals develop and possess knowledge, skills, understanding and beliefs to lead school improvement in a Catholic context. Principals have a clear understanding of their leadership and management responsibilities, their personal leadership capacity and priorities for development, and the networks, personnel and resources available to assist them in their role.
