Indonesian guests taste local delights

Indonesian guests_story1It was a welcome fit for a Queen. The children at Our Lady Help of Christians School in Brunswick East enthusiastically greeted the principal and two teachers from their sister school in Bandung in Indonesia.

The students welcomed their guests after months of emailing, writing and using Skype to contact Maria Bintang Laut School (Mary Star of the Sea School).

The visit followed a trip to Indonesia in 2011 by Our Lady’s principal, Philip Cachia, and three staff. ‘During the year we have had various fundraising efforts, including a crazy-hair day, to sponsor a visit to Australia by the three teachers from our sister school,’ said Mr Cachia. ‘They shared their Indonesian culture which was a highlight for the children.’

Apart from the school visit, Lanny Yuniarti, principal of Maria Bintang Laut School, and two of her teachers, travelled to Phillip Island, attended Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral and visited the Mary MacKillop Museum.

In September, five more teachers from Our Lady’s will visit Bandung in Java to ‘further enhance and broaden the relationship between our two schools’, said Mr Cachia.
